Think of the world around you. From the structure of honeycomb, to ripples in a pond, to pinecones, to snowflakes, to hurricanes. All of it comes back to math. Scientists and mathematicians have been discovering and studying the links between math and nature for thousands of years. And yet, many people do not realize the wonder of this idea. They will marvel at a canyon then still complain about the irrelevance of their math class, never thinking about the beautiful ways the two things may be connected. Nature gets represented in remarkable works of art, music, and poetry that are received with open arms and great appreciation, but math can play a similar role. For example, where Vivaldi had “Four Seasons”, Fibonacci had a sequence that would explain a seashell. Each tried in their own way to explain the wonders of our world. This page will explore some of the ways that math is represented in the world around us and even the space beyond that. And, hopefully, it will depict some of the ways that math can be truly beautiful.
Mathematics is the language in which God has written the universe. –Galileo Galilei
